White collar crime watch was talking with a criminal defense lawyer the other day. We were surprised to learn how many people still don’t know much about white collar crime. People are trusting, and they don’t watch out for white collar crime like they should. 

While the attorney defends people who have been accused of white collar crime, they acknowledged that this type of crime is serious.

The more you know about white collar crime, the better prepared you’ll be. You can actually do many things to protect yourself or your business from being a target for white collar criminals. When you have safeguards in place, white collar criminals will be less likely to target your business.

White collar crime is usually committed for financial gain. To be better educated about this serious problem, here are some examples of white collar crime:

Bank Fraud

Any type of fraud that is related to bank transactions would fall under bank fraud. An example of bank fraud would be someone lying on an application for a bank loan. Another example of bank fraud could include a customer depositing an empty deposit envelope and trying to say there was money inside it.

Mail Fraud

Mail fraud pertains to fraudulent activity through the mail. For example, someone sends fake sweepstakes through the mail in an effort to get your financial information or get money from you. Email fraud also falls under mail fraud.

Embezzlement

Stealing money from your employer by transferring funds without their knowledge or permission is a type of embezzlement. Many people in positions of power within a company or organization steal because so much trust is placed in them.

Money Laundering

When someone secures money through illegal means and then tries to pass it off as money earned through a legitimate business venture, this activity is called money laundering.
